JAKARTA: A political expert, who was also an activist during the 1998 reformation movement, deems some of his fellow movement peers as "stupid and ignorant".
"The group that calls themselves the Activists of 98 Movement shows its stupidity and ignorance by calling incumbent President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono the *Father of Democracy'," Fadjroel Rachman said.
"They seem to forget SBY's governance did nothing to resolve corruption and human rights violation cases taking place during the 1998 movement, such as the Trisakti tragedy, abduction of activists, the murder of human rights activist Munir, and major grafts involving Soeharto and his cronies."
The May 1998 tragedy was a major event catalyzing the reformation and the fall of Soeharto's 32 year dictatorship.
Four Trisakti students were killed during a heated demonstration inside the campus on Jl. Kyai Tapa in West Jakarta on May 12, 1998. The shooting triggered widespread student rallies and later social unrest, which led to Soeharto's resignation.
Human rights NGOs said around 1,000 people were killed during the tragedy. - JP
