Jakarta won the men’s team final over Central Java on Wednesday to lead with six gold at the inaugural National Tennis Games in Jakarta.
French Open boys’ doubles champion Christoper Benjamin Rungkat, better known as Christo, opened the scoring for Jakarta with a 6-4, 6-4 defeat of Davis Cup teammate Sunu Wahyu Trijati.
Nesa Arta beat David Agung Susanto 6-3, 3-6, 10-6 in the second singles match to give Jakarta an unassailable lead.
“It was a tough game. I was out of focus in the second set, but fortunately I managed to regain ground,” 19-year-old Christo said after the match, held under scorching heat at the Bung Karno tennis complex in Senayan, Jakarta.
The tournament, running from June 27 to July 5, serves as a warm-up event for Christo ahead of the Davis Cup Asia-Oceania Group II encounter with New Zealand, next week.
Host Jakarta has now collected six gold medals, four silvers and a bronze, with East Java trailing a distant second with two golds, three silvers and two bronze.
Nearly 500 players from 27 provinces are taking part in the event.
