J

akarta is leading the medal tally at the inaugural National Tennis Games here at the Bung Karno sports complex, having snatched a total of six gold medals, four silver and a bronze as of Wednesday evening.

The championships, which offer a total of Rp 500 million (some US$50,000) in cash prizes, are split into five divisions.

These include mini tennis (players under 8 years of age), under 14, under 16, adults and veterans (over 50). Twenty-seven provinces and at least 494 athletes are participating in the week-long event which concludes Friday.

Christopher Benjamin Rungkat of Jakarta, a 19-year-old who won the French Open junior men's doubles title with Finnish Henri Kontinen last year, overcame the scorching heat and Central Java's Sunu Wahyu Trijati 6-4, 6-4, in the finals.

"My opponent's play was solid enough. It was a tough game. I was out of focus in the second set but managed to return to my game afterwards," Christopher said.

Christopher's team mate Nesa Arta later added to the gold collection, defeating Central Java's David Agung Susanto 6-3, 3-6, 10-6. The win sealed Jakarta's place as the winner of the men's team division over Central Java.

Chairman of Jakarta chapter of the Indonesian Tennis Association (Pelti), Wiryatmoko, said he was satisfied with the results.

"Jakarta should be able to win in its home ground," he said.

In previous matches, Jakarta raked in five gold medals from the mini tennis team division, the boys' and girls' under 14's, the boys' under 16's and men's veterans.

Jakarta's four silver medals were gained from the boys' mini tennis, girls' under 16s, the women's team and veteran women's team divisions, and the bronze medal was from the girls' mini tennis division.

Meanwhile, East Java currently is in second place with two gold medals, three silver, and two bronze. East Kalimantan is trailing with one gold medal, one silver and four bronze. The province's gold was contributed by Jessy Rompies after defeating Jakarta in the single and double of the women's team divisions.
