JAKARTA: The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) questioned Riau Islands Governor Ismet Abdullah on Wednesday as a witness in relation to a graft scandal surrounding the purchase of fire engines and ambulances in several provinces throughout the country.

"He was questioned in relation to suspect OSD," KPK spokesman Johan Budi told reporters, referring to Oentarto Sindung Mawardi, former director general of regional autonomy at the Home Affairs Ministry.

The case revolves around the purchase of Rp 140 billion (US$13.65 million) worth of equipment for vocational training centers in 10 provinces.

Oentarto and recently arrested fugitive Hengky Samuel Daud are the latest suspects in the case that has already seen many government officials sent to prison.

Former Medan mayor Abdillah and his vice mayor Ramli Lubis received sentences of five and four years respectively for involvement in the case, while former Makassar mayor Baso Amiruddin Maula and former Riau governor Saleh Djasit were dealt four years each. They are all serving their sentences at the Cipinang Penitentiary in East Jakarta. - JP
