More choices allowed for prospective students

Prospective students for public junior high schools and high schools are now allowed to have five choices of school to enrol in, as the City Education Agency applies a new system for this academic year.

Agency head Taufik Yudi Mulyanto said Tuesday the system is expected to increase the students' chances of passing the selection process.

In previous years, each elementary school graduate could only enter three choices of middle school on their enrolment forms, and each middle school graduate could only enter three high schools.

"Students can now enter up to five middle or high schools, whose passing grades are within their reach, based the National Exam results. We hope these new procedures will improve the graduates' chances."

The first enrolment period started Wednesday, finishing Friday. The second will run from July 9-10.

The results of the first phase of selection will be announced on the website, www.jakarta.psb-online.or.id, on Friday, while the second phase results will be announced July 10.

Students that have been admitted to one of their school choices should come to the school on or between July 4, 6 or 7 for those applied on the first phase, and on July 11 for those who enrolled in the second phase.

The new school year is scheduled to commence July 31.

The City Education Agency has also guaranteed there will be no manipulation in the process, thanks to the Internet-based system.

Taufik said the so-called SIAP online system would not provide any loopholes for cheating, including seat-selling and illegal fees, because the process would be transparent.

This is the fourth year the agency has applied the system to middle school admission and is the sixth year for that of the high school.

"Based on the experience of previous years, the system has proven effective to eliminate levies and seat-selling. We guarantee there will be no loophole because every step in the process is accessible for the public. All data is accurate."

He asked the public to report to the agency if they found schools carrying out cheating practices.

Schools carrying out such practices would face punishment in the form of warnings and demotion.

He said the agency also set to deploy officials to monitor the enrolment process in all public schools.

Parents and students can also come to schools they would like to enrol in if they do not have an Internet connection, he added.

The online system has made it easier for parents to enrol their children, said Widi, whose daughter, Ratih Aulya, will enter junior high school this year.
