The Constitutional Court annulled a number of articles in the 2008 law regarding the presidential election Friday, which previously restricted the publication or broadcast of election-related stories in the three days before the election.
The panel of judges said the articles violated the Constitution, which protects freedom of speech and expression. The judges said restrictions on the media had not existed in any form since the turn of the reform era.
The chief editors of three dailies, including The Jakarta Post, a weekly magazine, a news portal and two news radio stations filed a judicial review against the articles. They deemed the articles detrimental to press freedom and believed they could benefit certain candidates.
Campaign activities will be banned during the three-day period leading up to voting day, know as the cooling-off period. (bbs)
