The Jakarta High Court has upheld a jail sentence for Daud Solleman Betawi, the non-active regent of Yapen Waropen, and ordered him to pay Rp 8.8 billion (US$880,000) in restitutions to the state.
Spokesman for the court, Andi Samsan Nganro, said Friday the regent would be forced to spend another two years in prison if he failed to heed the court’s order.
“We upheld the lower court’s verdict because the evidence proved he shared the stolen money with others. The defendant must be held accountable for that,” Andi said to Antara state news agency. The panel of appeal judges found Daud had distributed Rp 5 billion to a number of people.
The Corruption Court sentenced Daud to four years prison in April after finding him guilty of embezzling Rp 2.8 billion worth of regency funds in 2006.
The case revolves around a profit sharing enterprise involving land projects and more than Rp 25 million worth of central government building taxes.
