Denpasar raises parking fees at shopping centers

DENPASAR: The municipal parking agency has raised parking fees by 100 percent at Matahari Duta Plaza, Ramayana, Rimo, Robinson, Tiara Dewata and Carrefour hypermarket.

The new policy went into effect Wednesday.

Parking fees for motorcycles were raised from Rp 500 to Rp 1,000.

Fees for cars were likewise doubled, from Rp 1,000 per car to Rp 2,000.

The old fees remain valid for street-side parking, the agency said.

Municipal parking agency director I Nyoman Putrawan said the fee increase had been decided upon to avoid misuse of shopping centers' parking lots.

"Some people park there and head off elsewhere for a quite long time," he said.

"This hampers the centers in providing parking lots for their legitimate customers."

He added the fee increase would also benefit for the city's revenue agency. - JP

Since most of these carparks are absolutely filthy, run down and rat infested, one would hope that some of the money would be used to bring them up to a reasonable standard
