All-Indonesian final in Philippine Grand Prix men’s doubles

Indonesia is assured of the men’s doubles title at the US$120,000 Philippine Grand Prix Gold badminton tournament in Manila, after its players overcame Chinese opposition Saturday to set up an all-Indonesian final.

Top seeds M. Ahsan and Bona Septano defeated Chinese sixth seeds Chen Zhiben and Shen Ye in straight sets 21-18, 21-17, to meet compatriots Alvent Yulianto and Hendra Aprida Gunawan in Sunday’s final. Alvent and Hendra came from behind to beat Chinese seventh seeds Sun Junjie and Tao Jiaming 18-21, 21-10, 21-11.

Indonesian women’s doubles players Shendy Puspa Irawati and Meiliana Jauhari also advanced to the final with a comfortable 21-15, 21-13 win over Rie Eto and Yu Wakita of Japan. The top seeds will play Chinese pair Gao Ling and Wei Yili in the final.

In the mixed doubles, Indonesian pair M. Rijal and Debby Susanto lost to Chen Zhiben and Zhang Jinkang of China 21-15, 22-20.
