JAKARTA: The House of Representatives went into recess Thursday with a massive backlog of more than 60 bills awaiting lawmakers when they resume parliament on Aug. 14.
The recess period will last until Aug. 14, leaving the House around one-and-a-half months to complete its legislative tasks.
"So far, the House has managed to pass 166 our of the 284 bills submitted for deliberation," House speaker Agung Laksono said to a plenary meeting in Jakarta.
He said legislators should commit to completing their duties when they regroup for the final sitting session. The current House will end its tenure on Sep. 30.
If the House fails to resolve the 64 remaining bills, it will incur more than Rp 100 million (US$9.6 million) in state losses.
"Some of the bills awaiting deliberation are of high importance to the public, such as the Corruption Court bill. The House must pass the bill into law before the end of September," he said.
The House is expected to endorse two important bills on the structure of the People's Consultative Assembly, House, Regional Representatives Council, provincial, regency and municipal legislatures and on the corruption court. - JP
