Letters: Clarification on KPK report
| Opinion | Sat, July 04 2009, 12:59 PM
I was very surprised and upset to read The Jakarta Post's headline "Officials, not corruptors, main KPK foe" (July 2), in which I was quoted as "being irritated" about wiretapping and so on.
I wholly regret that the reporter wrote about this very sensitive issue without confirming with me. It is not true that I am "being irritated" and I did not make any statement judging or confirming about any government institution wiretapping anybody.
In fact, I am totally in full-support of any efforts (including wiretapping) used by institutions including the KPK, the Attorney General's Office and the National Police, especially with regards to upholding the credibility and integrity of government officials.
My conversation with a Vivanews reporter was to clarify the rumors about Gelora Bung Karno, which was said to have been sold by the GOI, and were not at all related to wiretapping.
When the conversation was suddenly distorted and disconnected I simply speculated that it might be caused by my mobile being wiretapped, but I did not confirm wiretapping by anybody, something I could not prove.
But, during the conversation, I firmly stated that wiretapping is not a problem with me since it is meant for a good cause. I am simply amazed that this has become an issue. I have already clarified my position on Vivanews this morning.
