SMS: BlackBerry ban

Your comments on the government's ban on the import of BlackBerry cell phones because Research in Motion Ltd, the manufacturer from Canada, has failed to open official service centers in Indonesia.

Just a wild guess, but maybe the solution is to open service centers here.

What has been stopping foreign companies from investing in Indonesia?

Perhaps the long process of setting up a company, the paper work, the ridiculous labor laws and the need to bribe the authorities.

If the Indonesian government can ensure an easy way to set up service centers without bribery, I'm sure RIM and many other foreign companies would happily invest in Indonesia without hesitation.

Sure, it would be very convenient for local BlackBerry users to have a RIM office here.

The question is why RIM did not open service centers here? Could it be that the ministry's demands to RIM are unreasonably high or beyond the "normal" requirements for establishing a local office here?

If the Ministry insists on extending its ban to all versions of the BlackBerry and should RIM still not comply with its present demands, it would be a big step backward for Indonesia's IT sector specifically and for the public in general.

Giving RIM a license to import BlackBerry phones, would prevent counterfeit products on the black market.
