MATARAM: The Lembar seaport administrator in West Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, revealed Friday that solar cells used for generating electricity at its four lighthouses had been stolen, inflicting losses of Rp 100 million (US$10,000).
"In the past six months, we have lost four solar cells worth Rp 30 million to Rp 40 million each," head of the seaport security division, M. Thahrir, told The Jakarta Post.
Thahrir said security officers had trouble monitoring the lighthouses effectively because they were some distance away.
"We knew that the solar cells were stolen after the lamps in the lighthouses went off. Now we are increasing security and monitoring around the lighthouses."
The seaport has nine lighthouses - four located in hilly land and five offshore. Solar cells are commonly stolen from lighthouses, the administrator said.
Currently, the seaport serves 17 ferry ships from Padangbai seaport in Bali and at least 20 cargo ships. - JP
