Seven-time champion Lance Armstrong began his comeback at the Tour de France on Saturday in the first-stage individual time trial in Monaco.
The 37-year-old Texan, back after 3 years of retirement, took ff 18th among the 180 cyclists who are rolling down the start ramp one-by-one for the race against the clock.
The 15.5-kilometer (9.6 mile) first stage takes riders along the winding and hilly roads of the small Mediterranean principality, and time trial specialists are expected to excel.
The weather was hot and muggy as Skil-Shimano team rider Kenny Robert Van Hummel set off first in the time trial, in which riders leave one by one.
The time trial is likely to offer an early shakeout of potential title contenders who will want to at least hold their own. Specialists in the discipline include Fabian Cancellara of Switzerland and British rider Bradley Wiggins.
