Citing the need for efficiency, the general assembly of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) has agreed to incorporate the Asian Martial Arts Games into the Asian Indoor Games.
Thailand will host the inaugural and last Asian Martial Arts Games from Aug. 1 to 9, after which the event will be merged into a relatively more established multi-event gamed, the Asian Indoor Games.
The third Asian Indoor Games will be held in Vietnam from Nov. 2-12.
The OCA general assembly, chaired by president Sheikh Ahmad Al Fahad Al Sabah, is underway in Singapore on the sidelines of the Asian Youth Games, which will conclude Sunday. The assembly also decided Friday to hold continental multi-sports events like the Asian Beach Games, the Asian Winter Games and the Asian Indoor Games every four years, to ease the financial burden on the council’s 45 member countries.
“This ruling curtails the overlapping multi-event games in the region. It’s difficult to optimally prepare our resources, especially financial, energy and time, if too many games take place. Therefore we fully support the decision,” Indonesian Sports Council (KONI) secretary-general Rosihan Arsyad said Saturday.
In response to the OCA ruling, the secretary-general of the Indonesian Wushu Association, Ngatino, expressed hope that a complete version of the martial art event would be featured in the indoor games.
Asia is preparing for the 16th Asian Games in Guangzhou, China, in November 2010, and the second Asian Beach Games in Muscat a month later.
The 17th Asian Games in 2014 will be held in Incheon, South Korea, which will see the number of medal events reduced to 35 sports, from the 43 in Guangzhou.
From the 18th Asian Games onward, the continental sports event will be held a year prior to the Olympic Games. This means the 18th Asian Games will take place in 2019.
