JAKARTA: The city administration plans to add more 10 school buses, an official said Saturday.
Head of the city's facility bureau, Udar Pristono, said the adminis-tration had allocated Rp 5 billion in the 2009 revised budget for the buses.
"Each bus costs between Rp 400 million and Rp 500 million," Udar told Antara news agency.
He said the addition of the free school buses aimed to help more students reach school earlier. If the plan is approved by the city council, the new fleet will hit the road in December.
As of June, the administration has operated 37 school buses, which start operating at 5 a.m.
Udar said there was an increase of 46.8 percent of students using the bus since the administration enacted a regulation to change the beginning of school hours from 7 a.m to 6.30 a.m.
The school bus program was started in 2007 but after six month operating, the city administration temporarily stopped the buses' operations in December 2007.
The city administration said due to late budget disbursement, the buses did not have the funds to run. Later, after the budget was disbursed, the yellow buses hit the road again. - JP
