RI, Malaysia discuss migrant workers

The Indonesian and Malaysian governments are scheduled to hold talks Monday in Putra Jaya, Selangor, as part of efforts to help improve the condition of Indonesian migrant workers in Malaysia.

Manpower and Transmigration Minister Erman Soeparno, who will represent Indonesia, said before departing to Malaysia that he hoped the two countries would reach a new agreement at the meeting.

"I will discuss with the Malaysian Human Resources Minister [S. Subramaniam] means to select good employers in Malaysia and punish them severely should they abuse our migrant workers," he said as quoted by kompas.com.

The government has since June 26 halted the sending of migrant workers to Malaysia, after several Indonesian workers were abused by their Malaysian employers.

There are an estimated 2.2 million Indonesian migrant workers in Malaysia, only 1.2 million of whom are there legally
