BEKASI: The Jakarta administration and Bekasi municipal administration signed a new deal Monday on the extension of the Bantar Gebang landfill.

Among the signatories were Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo, Bekasi Mayor Mochtar Muhammad and director of third party company PT Godang Tua Jaya, Rony Sitorus.

Head of the Bekasi Environment Office, Dudy Setiabudhi, confirmed the signing ceremony, saying the deal allowed Jakarta to use the landfill for another 20 years.

The new contract also requires Jakarta carry out an evaluation on the operation of the dump site annually and conduct a comprehensive evaluation every five years.

Dudy said Bekasi would demand Jakarta pay higher fees in compensation for treating the waste.

"The deal is in accordance with the call made by Bekasi city councillors on the waste processing system at the dump site," Dudy said as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.

In the new deal, Jakarta is only allowed to dispose a maximum of 4,500 tons of its 6,500 tons of trash daily at the dump site. -JP
