This is a comment on an article titled "Study asks Indonesia to adopt green economy," (the Post, July 1)
The article quoted a result of a study carried out by the Center for Development and Economic Studies, Padjajaran University, Bandung as saying that: "Investing more in energy efficiency, reducing the use of coal-based fuels and stopping deforestation, could improve per capita incomes and help ease the level of unemployment".
Indeed, that's true, who disagrees with such conclusion? But what's next?
The main point of every scientific effort is to see how such recommendations can be implemented properly.
But, the fact shows that deforestation is increasingly uncontrollable. In several regions like North Sumatra, we will see that even the so called conserved forests are now being devastated by the illegal loggers.
Meanwhile, the local government as well as local parliament members have also tried to establish regulations that allow the local government to exploit the forest.
Quite a lot deforestation occurs in places where the government does not pay attention. After the implementation of the decentralization law, many local governments excessively exploited forest.
Therefore, we have to take an immediate action to protect our forests and other resources from the greedy power, and those who have no commitment to save our planet.
