Six companies in East Kalimantan, including three hospitals, have received a red label for polluting the environment, an official said Tuesday.

Tuparman, head of the provincial environment agency, said Balikpapan Hospital, Taman Husada Hospital, Tarakan Hospital, forest concessionaire  PT Rimba Raya Lestari Kutai Kartanegara, plywood company PT Kayu Lapis Asli Murni and plantation company PT Perkebunan XIII PMS Long Kali ranked the worst in the latest environmental audit.

The companies have escaped punishment due to the lack of legislation concerning the annual audit.
“Our team verified the worst practices of environmental management in the companies,” Tuparman said.

“The hospitals, for instance, operate incinerators but fail to make full use of the facility.”

The audit involved 76 private and city-owned companies, and was conducted in conjunction with World Environment Day.
