The Health Ministry said Thursday that the number of H1N1 flu cases had almost doubled as the virus had spread beyond the northern part of Sumatra to areas in Kalimantan.
The ministry confirmed that 24 more people were suspected of having contracted the H1N1 flu, bringing the total number of cases in the country to 52.
Health Minister Siti Fadilah Supari said that 14 of the new suspects had traveled aboard prior to the infection. Three are foreigners, while the rest are Indonesians.
The 15 men and nine women are now undergoing treatment at seven hospitals across the country, including the Sulianto Saroso Hospital for Infectious Diseases in Jakarta, Adam Malik General Hospital in Medan, North Sumatra and the Kanujoso Djati Hospital in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan.
Siti said the H1N1 was not more dangerous than the regular flu, but insisted the ministry would continue to take precautionary measures by requiring thermal scanning for visitors in airports. (adh)
