Foreign worker shot dead
at Freeport mine in Papua

Unknown assailants shot and killed a 29-year-old Australian working at Freeport-McMoran mine in Mimika, Papua on early Saturday morning.

Drew Nicholas Grant died after a shot was fired at a vehicle near the mine at around 5:30 a.m. local time in Mile 53 in Kuala Kencana district. He was taken to Tembagapura Hospital, but died due to the wound.

The victim worked as a Technical Expert for Municipal Construction at the mine's management facility. He had been staying in Hidden Valley in Tembagapura.

Papua Police chief Insp. Bagus Ekodanto told The Jakarta Post that confirmed the incident but has yet to find further details on it. (dre)
