A researcher from the dentistry faculty at the University of Indonesia, Lies Zubardiah M. Qasim, has developed an alternative cure to gingivitis made from traditional leaves locally known as Inai or Henna (Lawsonia inermis Linnaeus).

In a statement Sunday, Lies Zubardiah said that Inai leaves had been used by village people across Indonesia to cure cuts and wounds for years.

After conducting a series of tests involving Inai leaves on both animals and humans, Lies discovered that Inai leaves contained various anti-bacterial elements such as flavonoid, saponin, triterpen and tanin, which fight the bacteria that causes gingivitis.

The treatment derived from the leaves can been used by both children and adults suffering from the gum disease.

If not treated properly, gingivitis can develop into periodentitis, which causes gums to loosen and leads to teeth loss.

Antara news agency reported that Lies was currently going through the process of acquiring the necessary intellectual property rights for the treatment.
