Automotive club to promote safe driving jointly with police

Maneuvering the congested streets of the big cities in Indonesia is a challenging task, let alone when automotive or motorcycle clubs take to the streets in convoys.

Many vehicle owners in the country form clubs, whose activities include regular convoys. Reportedly, clashes with other road users often happen during such activities.

Mailani Akhmad said the motorcycle convoys she sometimes came across had always got on her nerves.

"They drive carelessly and make the congestion even worse."

Heri Subagyo from the National Police Directorate of Traffic said the clashes happened because many automotive club members were arrogant.

"The most disturbing of all are the big motorcycle clubs; they are devil-may-care and act like the kings of the streets," he said Monday.

However, at least one club seems set to beat the odds.

The Volkswagen Indonesia club is set to cooperate with the directorate to promote safe driving.

During its regular get-together to be held July 18-19 in Bogor, West Java, the club will hold events to educate 5,000 attendees on road safety.

The club's public relations officer, Yanto Herlambang, said 1,000 Volkswagen cars across the country would bear safe driving stickers.

"Staff from the Directorate of Traffic will also give lectures on how to drive safely," he said, adding the club planned to hold a discussion forum on the subject.

Yanto claimed his club was the first to propose such cooperation with the directorate.

"We want to set a good example for other road users. With this cooperation I hope to see other clubs practicing orderly driving and refrain from breaking the rules," said Kartono, a division head from the Directorate of Traffic.

Heri said the directorate was very supportive of such clubs, but urged them to partner with the police. (adh)
