A free online dictionary, thesaurus and glossary will be launched Sunday (July 19) in Malang, East Java, at the ad-free website http://www.bahtera.org/kateglo/.

It will serve as a useful English-Indonesia, Indonesia-English and Indonesia-Indonesia reference for students, writers, journalists or anyone needing to know an accurate translation or reference quickly.

Named Kateglo Bahtera, it will be launched during the celebration of the 12th anniversary of Bahtera, the main mailing list for translators and interpreters. The list has around 2,000 members from all over Indonesia, and includes people from some foreign countries also.

Kateglo (a combination of kamus, tesaurus and glosarium or dictionary, thesaurus and glossarium) is the brainchild of Ivan Lanin, a mailing list member and active contributor to Wikipedia Indonesia, and Romi Hardiyanto, a translator for the Firefox web browser.

They referred to the glossary from the Language Center at the Ministry of National Education, and developed it further with input from members of their mailing lists.

“Kateglo Bahtera is the main reference. It is nearly complete and contains tens of thousands of entries in various fields, from biology and chemistry to medicine and technology. Anyone can use it for free on the internet,” said Sofia Mansoor, the founder of the Bahtera mailing list. (JP)
