President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said that state intelligence officers had detected plans to challenge the results of the July 8 presidential election through acts of violence, but he was uncertain if the moves were related to the bomb attacks on two foreign-owned hotels in Jakarta on Friday.
Speaking in a televised media conference, Yudhoyono said there were also plans to take over the General Elections Commission building once the election results were announced.
“There was a planned revolution if SBY won; there was a plan to turn Indonesia into Iran [the revolution in 1979],” Yudhoyono said.
Yudhoyono has ordered a thorough investigation of the terror attacks even if they are found to be unrelated to the results of the presidential election.
He said suspicion and speculation surrounding the links between the bomb attacks and the group that challenged the election results should be legally proved in order to uphold the rule of law.
