KPU fails to address voter list fiasco: Poll watch

The Election Supervisory Body (Bawaslu) says the General Elections Commission has failed to address problems related to the fixed voter list for the presidential election.

Bawaslu chief Nur Hidayat Sarbini said Saturday the electoral roll fiasco stemmed from the commission’s poor planning, administering and monitoring of the voter registration for the July 8 polls.

“KPU has failed to address the problems arising from the disputed voter registration,” Nur Hidayat was quoted by Antara state news agency.

Bawaslu has found the KPU did not determine its positioning paper which would otherwise serve as its guidelines in its policy making, Nur Hidayat said. He added that the changed the fixed electoral roll behind the schedule because of the absence of such guidelines.

The voter list was the center of dispute between the KPU and presidential candidates, particularly Megawati Soekarnoputri and Jusuf Kalla, prior to and after the election. The campaign team for Megawati and her running mate Prabowo Subianto claimed to have found irregularities in the electoral roll, such as multiple registrations of voters, ghost voters and under-aged voters.

The Megawati-Prabowo pair will challenge the election results at the Constitutional Court based on the flawed electoral roll.
