Presidential candidate Megawati Soekarnoputri and his running mate Prabowo Subianto did not attend the official announcement of the results of presidential election at the General Elections Commission (KPU), and instead they sent their lawyer Gayus Lumbuun.
Gayus, also a politician from Megawati’s Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle, refused to accept the documents detailing results of the presidential election from KPU chairman Abdul Hafiz Anshary.
"We, on behalf of the pair of Megawati and Prabowo, refuse to accept the result of the presidential elections," said Gayus, who is also the coordinator of Megawati-Prabowo's legal team.
Gayus explained that Megawati and Prabowo refused to accept the result because of what they claimed as rampant election violations, including the problematic voters roll.
He said his team of lawyers would study all the documents and would demand a revote to the Constitutional Court.
In its official results, KPU declared that incumbent Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and his running mate Boediono won the election with 60.8 percent of the vote. Megawati-Prabowo collected only 26.8 percent and the pair of Jusuf Kalla and Wiranto 12.4 percent.
Kalla and Wiranto, who were present during the announcement, said they also rejected the official results and would consider filing a case with the Constitutional Court.
