If you want to experience foods from four continents in one go, you might want to try Peruvian food.
This week will be the perfect time to sink your teeth into Peruvian food as the Peruvian Embassy of Jakarta, in commemoration of its national day, holds a Peruvian Food Festival from July 24 to July 31 in Hotel Gran Melia's Caf* Gran Via in Kuningan, South Jakarta.
Peruvian food may be the most diverse cuisine in the world, thanks to its pre-Inca and Inca heritage and to Spanish, Basque, African, Sino-Cantonese, Japanese and finally Italian, French and British immigration (mainly throughout the 19th century).
Some of the Peruvian signature dishes include causa vegetariana (vegetables wrapped in mashed potato), empanada de quesa (cheese empanada), lomo saltado (beef tenderloin slices, saut*ed with onions, tomatoes, hot peppers and other spices, served with French fries and rice) and seco de cordero (coriander lamb stew).
There are also desserts and cakes, such as suspiro a la lime*a (milk pudding) and pastel de yucca (cassava cake).
You may also be interested in trying the national drink of Peru: pisco sour. Made from pisco (Peruvian liquor), lemon or lime juice, egg whites and simple syrup, the cocktail feels a bit sour at first, before giving way to a refreshing sweetness.
