YOGYAKARTA: In an effort to help mitigate any disasters around a beach area in Bantul regency, Yogyakarta, some 5,000 trees were planted there Monday.
The move was carried out jointly by the Indonesia Red Cross and its German counterpart in cooperation with local residents.
The trees were planted along a two-kilometer-long and 500-meter-wide beach area at Tirtohargo village, Kretek, Bantul.
The activity was part of a mangrove planting program that was initiated along Bantul beaches in 2003.
The Tirtohargo area was chosen for the program because mangrove trees have so far been growing well there, unlike in other areas, according to officials. - JP
