Jakarta police detectives raided Thursday a tofu factory in Cipinang, East Jakarta, which illegally used formalin as one of its ingredients.

Jakarta Police spokesman Adj. Sr. Comr. Mahbub said the police found out about the factory's illegal activity from the public.

Police also seized tofu production equipment from the factory, located on Jl Harapan II, Cipinang Melayu Makasar, East Jakarta.

"The factory, which produces a well-known brand of tofu, had been selling a lot of tofu to several markets in Jakarta for a while now," Mahbub added.

He said the government had banned the use of formalin in food production.

Formalin is usually used to prevent remains from rotting. (bbs)
