A gathering hosted by Golkar Party chairman candidate Aburizal Bakrie in Makassar has paid off as he secured support from all the eight provincial chapter and 67 regional chapter leaders attending.
At the conclusion of the meeting on Friday night, the chapter leaders from Sulawesi and Maluku declared their commitment to voting for Aburizal in the party’s national caucus, which is scheduled to take place in December, although many have demanded an earlier date.
They also proposed the national caucus be held in Makassar, the hometown of current chairman Jusuf Kalla.
Kalla has hinted he would exit politics following his defeat in the presidential election last month. He also failed to lead Golkar to victory in the April legislative elections.
Aburizal’s move to Golkar’s top executive seat will pave the way for its reconciliation with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s Democratic Party.
