Police in the East Java regency of Probolinggo have arrested a man for allegedly blaspheming against Islam.
Witnesses told the police that Jazuli, a resident of Kebonagung village in Kraksaan district, tore a Holy Koran and scorned Muslims in the village.
“The case has nothing to do with the suspect’s belief as he doesn’t have any,” Probolinggo police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Sunardi Riyono said Saturday.
Sunardi said the police found evidence of the blasphemy on the cellular phone of a witness who recorded the suspect in the act.
Religious leaders in the regency have called on Muslims to remain calm and asked the public to respect the rule of law.
