Vice president Jusuf Kalla and Jakarta governor Fauzi Bowo have encouraged children to forbid parents from smoking and littering.
"Tell your father if he still wants to be your father, he has to stop smoking. If he doesn't want to do so, tell him you want to become the governor or vice president's child because they don't smoke," Fauzi said after a young girl named Tias asked the two officials how to stop their father's smoking habit.
Kalla said Tias should tell her father that smoking could make him and his family sick.
Fauzi also told the children that they should reprimand their parents for littering.
The two officials shared jokes and dialogues with around 600 children from five municipalities to celebrate National Children’s Day in Suropati Park, Menteng, on Sunday.
The celebration, featured drawing activities, poetry readings and a writing competition as well as a doll performance held by the Jakarta Forum Resident (Fakta) under the theme "If I became the governor".
Some children expressed their hopes about the city in the writing competition.
"If I became the governor, I would make Jakarta a beautiful and comfortable place to live by asking people not to litter," 12-year-old Anah Paliton told The Jakarta Post.
She said the reason was because adults and children in her neighborhood in Kesepatan, North Jakarta, dumped garbage in the river, creating a bad smell and a dirty environment.
