Jakarta track and field team's Irene Truitje Joseph won one of the most prestigious 100-meter dash, but East Java wrapped up the four-day national championship on Saturday winning the most medals.
Veteran runner Irene proved she was the competitor to be reckoned with as she clocked the best time of 12.04 seconds, winning the women's 100 meters at the Madya Stadium in Jakarta.
"Praise the Lord. This is God's best gift so far. Although I believe I could have fared better had it not been for my injury," said Irene, who has been suffering from a nagging knee injury since 2002.
The injury prompted her to take a rest from competing for a year. The 27-year-old Irene was still unable to break the national record of 11.56 she set ten years ago.
Tri Setyo Utami finished second in 12.15 seconds, followed by fellow East Javanese Indah Lisa Wijayanti in 12.19 seconds.
While East Java failed in the women's 100 meters, it triumphed in the men's 100 meters, winning one of the two gold medals the contingent collected on the final day.
East Java emerged as the overall champion with a total of eight gold, eight silver and seven bronze medals. Jakarta came in second, with six gold, six silver and three bronze medals, followed by West Java.
Apip Dwi Cahyo finished first in the men's 100-meter final in 10.54 seconds, three hundredth of a second ahead of Fadlin of West Nusa Tenggara, who finished in 10.57 seconds. Taufik Rachmadi of Jakarta followed behind running the distance in 10.75 seconds.
The second gold medal for East Java came from the men's 4x400 meter relay, while the women's gold went to the Maluku team.
Agus Prayogo of Central Java won the men's 10,000 meters in 30 minutes, 26.24 seconds.
Asril of Bangka Belitung triumphed in the men's long jump with a 7.32-meter jump.
Jakartan Nunung Jayadi came first in the men's pole vault.
