SMS: `Demand for election rerun or runoff'

A- A A+

Your comments on the call from the camp of presidential candidate Megawati Soekarnoputri for a revote or a runoff as they filed a lawsuit against the General Elections Commission.

No matter how many lawsuits Megawati files against the KPU, or how many millions of voters' names she claims were fraudulent or missing, it won't help her turn the tide around.

Even if they get their way, the result will be the same. They will still lose, and this time at a higher price to the nation. Which do they love more: their nation, their "rakyat", or their ego? They are acting like a pampered brat who is denied a favorite toy. Ignoring their behavior may help them grow up a bit.

I completely agree with this move. We have to learn that things must be done correctly. When something is conducted in an unfair way, where too many people are denied their right to vote (including myself), it would be dangerous to not take action for the future.

The past often acts as an indicator of the future. People tend to believe that unfairness can lead to someone becoming a leader, and think society will accept it sooner or later because they will forget about the injustice.

When people only think about the outcome of the election and forgot the process, history will simply repeat itself. Why is it that those who reject the unfair result are called selfish or unwise? This is really an ugly society. Mega's choice to contest the election was not about the result, but about the unjust processes behind it.

I admire Mega for her capacity as a leader of the nation. I admire her willingness to teach the nation to be honest, to be fair, to follow the rules and laws. I think she is really a brave leader.

The result of the presidential election showed the sharp gap in support between the three candidates. There would be no significant change in the result if there was an election rerun.

I think all candidates were involved in violations during the election campaign. There will be no use to carry out a rerun. It may even spark horizontal conflict.

I am an Indonesian and voted in the election for many reasons. One reason was just to carry out my duty as a citizen. I also hoped the election would have been carried out in a fair way.

But if the election was held once more, my concern is about wasting people's money. Mega has the right to demand fairness, but it would be nice if she congratulated the winning candidate.

Mega, you lost! Deal with it and move one, just as Indonesia has moved on from you.

The people have given the SBY-Boediono team their mandate. No runoffs should be necessary. The Mega-Pro "team" is really a group of young upstarts who are trying to impress the people of Indonesia with their "macho-politic" style.

Megawati must provide strong evidence about what she alleged.

I spoke to many Acehnese people recently, and they do not want Megawati to be in power. SBY might not be the best, but he is certainly better for Indonesia than the two others.

I respect Megawati. I respect her father. And we all know that she failed in this election. I am going to respect her more if she just accepts that and supports the president elect instead of insisting on a second round of election.

Megawati should have admitted her defeat honourably. Filing a lawsuit and calling for an election rerun will worsen her image gravely.

We, the Indonesian voters, may not know exactly what characteristics we want in our leaders, but we do know what we don't want.

If Megawati decided to wholeheartedly work with the president-elect SBY to help Indonesia become a safer, more democratic and prosperous country, then perhaps she might finally earn some respect from the Indonesian people.
