DENPASAR: The Denpasar administration will hold a car-free day every Sunday, starting Aug. 16.

The plan follows the enactment this year of a bylaw that partly recommends the local administration provide special lanes for bicyclists.

Denpasar administration spokesman I Made Erwin Suryadarma said Tuesday the new regulation would affect the roads around public offices in Renon, including Jl. Raya Puputan, Jl. Cut Nyak Dien, Jl. Basuki Rakhmat and Jl. Juanda.

"The bylaw will be in force during the day," Erwin said at his office in Denpasar.

He added the car-free program could be expanded to include other main thoroughfares in the city in the future.

The car-free program will have an official pre-launch from the Denpasar mayor on Aug. 15, at a ceremony to be attended by cycling groups. - JP
