Two KPK leaders know about controversial tape recording

Suspended Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) chief Antasari Azhar had shared with two other KPK leaders a tape recording that disclosed a graft scandal involving one of their colleagues before his controversial testimony to the police, a lawyer said.

The tape recording was recently reported in a handwritten testimony by Antasari, who is facing trial for his alleged role in the murder of state company director Nasruddin Zulkarnaen.

In the recording, according to Antasari’s testimony, graft suspect Anggoro Widjojo says he has bribed a KPK leader.

“Antasari did not tell the other commissioners about his meeting with Anggoro, because he wanted to investigate about reports on possible involvement of a KPK leader in a graft case,” one of Antasari’s lawyers, Denny Kailimang, told a discussion on Saturday.

Denny said that after obtaining Anggoro’s confession, Antasari gave the tape recording to his secretary to be saved in his laptop. Not long after that, Antasari played the recording to two commissioners so that they could follow up the case.

“However, before they had a chance to do that, Antasari was arrested by the police for the murder case,” Denny said.

Denny, however, refused to identify the two commissioners who heard the recording.

Denny’s claim contradicts a statement by deputy KPK chairman Bibit Samad Riyanto who accused Antasari of joining a smear campaign to undermine the commission and said none of the commissioners knew anything about Antasari’s meeting with Anggoro. (hdt)
