H1N1 infects 711 people in Indonesia

The Ministry of Health announced 80 new cases of H1N1 influenza in the country, bringing the total number of infected people to 711.

Head of the ministry’s research and development agency Agus Purwadianto was quoted by kompas.com as saying Monday that 65 of the new infections had been found in East Java and Central Java, with the rest in West Kalimantan, Lampung, Aceh and Riau.

The director general for disease control and environmental health said the virus had now spread to 22 of the country’s 33 provinces. Jakarta tops the list with 245 people, followed by Banten with 115 people, East Java with 109 people, West Java with 65 people and Central Java with 35 people.

The virus has killed five people in the country.

Since the World Health Organization declared a global H1N1 pandemic on June 11, the virus has infected 162,380 people, killing1,154 of them across the world.
