East Nusa Tenggara inhabitants greeted with enthusiasm on Friday the latest poll to pick new seven wonders of nature in the world, which ranks Komodo National Park sixth in the provisional standings.

Governor Frans Leburaya said the early returns proved the world community’s solid support for Komodo Island to win the prestigious title as one of the seven new wonders on earth.

“The government and all related institutions are calling on people across the country to show their support by voting for Komodo Island."

The provincial tourism and culture agency has installed dozens of Internet-linked computers at the ongoing handcraft exhibition in Kupang to enable local people to vote for the island. Votes can be cast at www.new7wonders.com.

Komodo Island, home to the endemic Komodo dragons, ranks sixth among 28 places across the world in contention for the prominent status. The island only trails Iquazu Falls, the Amazon, the Great Barrier Reef, Angels Falls and Galapagos.

The official declaration of the new seven wonders of nature will be in 2011.
