AKARTA: While others will be celebrating Independence Day on Monday with various festivities and neighborhood competitions, singer Iwan Fals will be holding a concert to boost the nationalist spirit.
With the aim of using his performance as a means to unite communities, Iwan's concert, to be held at Taman Mini Indonesia Indah on Aug. 16, is called "Keeping Togetherness in Life".
"This actually is a regular event held every three years by OI and will host some 1,200 OI members from all over Indonesia," Iwan said as quoted by news portal Inilah.com on Thursday.
OI, short for "Orang Indonesia" (Indonesians), is a grassroots group consisting of faithful fans of the singer, who will turn 48 next month.
"It's our way to celebrate independence day, while at the same time celebrating OI's 10th anniversary," he said. "Before the concert we will throw a day-long event, the National Gathering, at the same venue. The concert will be the highlight for the next day."
In addition to his down-to-earth and patriotic songs, Iwan will perform "Kesaksian" (Testimony) in remembrance of the late poet W. S. Rendra. The song, which Iwan composed, was once performed alongside a poetry recital by Rendra.
Among Indonesian audiences, Iwan is well known for his songs of social criticism as well as for his not-so-typical love ballads. His most recent album, released in 2007, features a song dedicated to human rights activist Munir. Iwan was named one of the Asian Heroes by Time Asia magazine in 2002 for his contribution to society through his music and social activism. - JP
