Monorails

A- A A+

The administration has planned to build the monorail project since 2003 as part of its integrated transportation system design, aimed at overcoming traffic problems.

The whole monorail system would 27.8 km long, consisting of a 14.3 kilometer route connecting Semanggi and Kuningan business districts and a 13.5-kilometers route connecting Kampung Melayu in East Jakarta and Taman Anggrek mall in west jakarta.

The administration expected the monorail system to transport up to 120,000 passengers per day.

In 2007, it is estimated that the project would need US$484 million. Of the estimate budget, 70 percent was expected to be funded by banks or private investors.

In March 2008, developers PT Jakarta Monorail officially abandoned the project due to legal and financial problems, leaving a series of idle pillars along some thoroughfares, like in Senayan, Central Jakarta, and Kuningan, South Jakarta. Many road users complained that some of the pillars were obstructing traffic flow, especially those on Jl. Gelora in Central Jakarta.
