Police vow to settle journalist's murder case

C

ontinuing cooperation between the Bali police and the provincial prosecutor's office, the two institutions' chiefs pledged Tuesday that they would settle criminal cases, especially those coming under public spotlight.

Among current high profile cases are the murder of journalist AA Narendra Prabangsa, who was found dead on Feb. 16, 2009, floating in the water off Padangbai, Karangasem; and the troubled Karangasem Development Cooperative (KKM) for presumably running the Ponzi scheme, which also came to light in February.

"We just had a coordination meeting and, hopefully, the *journalist's murder* case will be ready for further processing by next week," new Bali Police chief Insp. Gen. Sutisna told reporters shortly after a meeting with the provincial prosecutor's office head Marwan Suherman.

Sutisna further said that nine dossiers of Prabangsa's alleged murderers, including possible mastermind Nyoman Susrama, kid brother of Bangli Regent I Nengah Arnawa, were about to be sent back to the police to be completed administratively.

"Basically, all nine dossiers are all OK. But we still have to fulfil some of the prosecutor's requests," he said.

The nine dossiers of Prabangsa's possible murderers were delivered to the Prosecutors' Office last Thursday. The eight remaining alleged perpetrators are I Komang Gede, Mangde, Rencana , Endy, Jampes, Gus Oblong, Maong and Dewa Sumbawa.

Responding to the Prabangsa case, Warman said: "The dossiers are actually 90 percent ready. Hopefully, we will receive the completed dossiers by next week, or two weeks at the latest, so we can write prosecution letters in order to carry the case to court."

Meanwhile on the KKM case, Sutisna said the police have conducted cooperations with Bank of Indonesia for Bali to settle the banking case.

"We will continue to use the banking law on the case."

The KKM case revealed after the cooperative offered unrealistically high interest rates of 150 percent on deposits made by members.

The embezzlement is believed to have cost KKM members more than Rp 210 billion in losses, and led to the then KKM director, I Putu Gede Kertia, and manager, I Nengah Wijanegara, being named suspects.

Both have been charged with violating Article 16 of the 1998 banking law, for running a banking operation without a license from the central bank.

They face a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison and Rp 15 billion in fines, if found guilty.
