DENPASAR: Mayor IB Rai Dharmawijaya Mantra has declared that the city's civil servants must ride bicycles to and from work on Fridays.
In a letter to the hear of every government agency in the city, the mayor said that by commuting by bicycle, public servants would play a major part in reducing pollution, as well as the city's chronic traffic jams.
"Unless the officials must attend a function that requires the use of car then they must use a bicycle," he said.
The mayor set an example by riding a bicycle to city hall on Friday. Scores of the city's high-ranking officials followed suit.
On Aug. 16, the Bali administration launched the Car Free Day (CFD) campaign, meaning that every Sunday from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. the streets in and around the Renon Administrative Center will be closed to motor vehicles.
The city's previous mayor launched a similar bike day initiative, but it was soon forgotten about. - JP
