An earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale shook Gorontalo City early Thursday morning, stirring panic and prompting residents to leave their homes. However, there were no reports of injuries or damages.
The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency reported that the quake's epicenter was located 87 kilometers southeast of Gorontalo Province, which is located at the northern part of Sulawesi Island at 95 kilometers beneath the Tomini Gulf Waters.
"We were worried as we felt a mild quake, but as it intensified, we decided to go outdoors,'' Ismail, a local resident, told Antara news agency.
Last November, a magnitude 7.7 earthquake hit Gorontalo, damaging hundreds of houses and causing two deaths.
