SEMARANG: The state-run Diponegoro University in Semarang, Central Java, has been rejecting applications from Malaysian students since 2006, not just in recent times, its rector says.
The university has rejected Malaysian student applications in the past, rector Susilo Wibowo said, following allegations Malaysia had laid claim to a number of cultural traditions from Indonesia.
Prioritizing Indonesian students was another key reason for rejecting their applications, he said.
"Malaysia has been sending four students every year to study at Undip. Most prefer enrolling at the Medical School as it is widely regarded as a good school," Susilo said Friday.
Malaysia students wishing to study medical science also pay around Rp 140 million for their course, as opposed to Rp 1.2 billion (US$120,000) in Malaysia, Susilo said. He said the government closed the university enrolment center in Kuala Lumpur this year in an effort to reduce the number of Malaysian students studying here. - JP
