The police officially declared Muhammad Jibril a suspect in the July 17 hotel bombings on Friday.

National Police chief Gen. Bambang Hendarso Danuri said further investigations had revealed Jibril was definitely a suspect in the bombings of the JW Marriott and Ritz-Carlton hotels in South Jakarta, which killed nine and wounded dozens.

"Based on the results of our investigations, we have identified "X" and Jibril is among the suspects involved the attacks," Bambang said to Antara.

He stopped short, however, of revealing the identities of "X" or the other suspects.

Police suspect that 29-year-old Muhammad Jibril Abdul Rahman, alias Muhammad Ricky Ardhan, was involved in some capacity with handling money from overseas used to finance the July bombings.

The police have already named a Saudi Arabian national, Ali Muhammad bin Abdullah, as a suspect involved with the trail of money from the Middle East to Indonesia. Investigations suggest that funding from the Middle East was provided to terrorist fugitive Noordin M. Top and Jemaah Islamiyah, the suspected branch of al-Qaeda in Southeast Asia.

The police have not yet elaborated on the exact role, if any, the two detainees played in the bombings.

Bambang said the police dispatched a team led directly by the deputy head of the Densus 88 counterterrorist unit, Tito Karnavian, to track down Jibril, but they found no leads. Just two hours after deciding to declare Jibril a fugitive and ask the public for assistance, police arrested him in Pamulang, south of Jakarta, on Tuesday.

One of Jibril's lawyers, Hariadi Nasution, said to kompas.com that their Muslim-based legal team filed a pre-trial motion against the police Friday to the South Jakarta District Court.

Another of his lawyers, Ahmad Riza Gultom, said they filed the motion to protest against police conduct during the arrest, claiming proper procedures for detainment were not followed.

"The arrest was not in line with procedures. A warrant was not presented, and his family were not notified of the arrest until more than 24 hours later. They should have been notified immediately," Ahmad said.

Bambang said the police were ready to defend themselves against this pre-trial motion.

"It is every citizen's right to file a motion to ensure police do not take the law into their own hands," he said.

Bambang said that after police had finished interrogating Jibril, they would reveal his role in the bombing plot to the public. Police have one week following the arrest of a terror suspect to carry out investigations before they must be released.

The police also detained three other suspects in relation to the case - Indra, Aris and Ahmad Fery.

Two suspects - Air Setiawan and Eko Joko - died during a police raid in Bekasi earlier this month, while the two suicide bombers, Nana Ichwan Maulana and Dani Dwi Permana, died in the blasts.

Apart from Noordin, Syaifudin Zuhri alias Udin alias Soleh, Ario Sudarso alias Suparjo Dwi Anggoro, Bagus Budi Pranoto alias Urwah and Mohamad Syahrir remain at large and are being hunted by police.
