Police get global help to trace al-Qaeda funding

A

n police official has said the force is cooperating with foreign agencies to track down sources of funding for the July 17 bombing of two hotels in Jakarta after they found indications of Muhammad Jibril's involvement with al-Qaeda and the bombings.

"The police are working with foreign agencies to establish the international link behind the terrorist acts," head of counter terrorism at the Coordinating Ministry for Legal, Political and Security Affairs, Insp. Gen. (ret) Ansyaad Mbai, told The Jakarta Post on Sunday.

Police Chief General Bambang Hendarso Danuri said Friday that police had evidence of Jibril's involvement with al-Qaeda.

"So far we have seen the preliminary signs of Jibril's involvement with al-Qaeda. However, we should wait for more details as it may link to other groups as well. In the meantime, let us do our work."

Mohamad Jibril, alias Muhammad Jibriel Abdul Rahman, alias Muhamad Ricky Ardhan, was still being questioned by the police after he was arrested last week.

The police alleged Jibril acted as a courier, helping Noordin M Top's Jamaah Islamiyah, which is believed to a regional arm of the al-Qaeda network, find donors to finance the recent bombings of the JW Marriott and the Ritz-Carlton hotels.

Besides Jibril, the police have questioned a Saudi Arabian by the name of Ali Muhammad bin Abdullah, alias Al Khalil Alil. Ali is suspected to have also acted as a courier.

Ansyaad Mbai said Jibril's involvement had proved the police's long-held suspicion that there were foreign organizations behind the series of terrorist attacks on Indonesian soil.

"This finding strengthens the police's earlier allegations in Gun Gun's case. Thus I highly expect that the police will be able to find and reveal the international link this time."

In 2004 the Central Jakarta District Court had found Gun Gun Rusman Gunawan guilty of aiding terrorism by channelling funds from al-Qaeda to Noordin M Top and the late Dr. Azhari Husein.

Gun Gun, the brother of, Hambali, who it is believed was once a regional leader of Jamaah Islamiyah and is currently detained by U.S. authorities at Guantanamo Bay, was deported by the Pakistan intelligence agency after it found out he was involved with al-Qaeda.

Intelligence expert Dynno Chressbon said the police were on the right track in their search to uncover the international network of funding for terrorist acts in Indonesia.
