Jakarta Police have raided three warehouses in the city and in Tangerang storing expired food that was allegedly to be sold ahead of the Idul Fitri holidays later in the month.
Adj. Sr. Comr. Rudi Setiawan, the police's industrial and trade crimes unit head, said Tuesday the police suspected the food was meant for distribution in supermarkets in Jakarta ahead of the holidays.
The police seized 40,000 boxes of candy from a warehouse on Jl. Perancis in Dadap, Tangerang, and 800,000 cases of imported food from a warehouse in Muara Baru, North Jakarta. The police also raided a warehouse on Jl. Kayu Besar Dalam in West Jakarta, which stored factory-reject food.
Rudi said the imported food items came from Malaysia and the UK.
Antara news agency reported owner of the warehouse in Tangerang has been arrested and is being questioned by the police.
The police and the Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) plan to conduct checks for expired and factory-reject food items at shopping centers in Jakarta on Oct. 20.
