The official website of the Geophysical, Climatology and Meteorology Agency was down Wednesday due to hectic traffic of people who wished to access it, an official said.

"There may be trouble with the server as too many people scramble to access it," BMKG spokesman Edison Gurning told The Jakarta Post shortly after an earthquake.

He admitted that the website often went down during major incidents like earthquakes, sparking complaints from the public.

He expected the website to run normally on Thursday.

An earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale jolted West and Central Java at 2:55 p.m., Wednesday. The rpicenter of the quake was located 143 kilometers southwest of the West Java town of Tasikmalaya at a depth of 30 kilometers beneath the seabed.

The quake was felt in major cities like Jakarta and Yogyakarta.

BMKG issued a tsunami alert shortly after the quake, but lifted it as the magnitude of the tremor lowered to 5 on the Richter scale.
